Quilting is, by nature a mathematical process. Quilters use geometric manipulation constantly to produce interesting designs based on iteration of patterns--it's a macro-scale fractal operation. So it makes sense for a quilting mathematician to produce mathematical quilts.
They're fun to look at, too.
