Tablet Math: Free Math Videos

TabletMath is actually a subscription service, but they put over 250 math videos on YouTube for homeschoolers, including videos that correlate with popular homeschooling math programs Saxon and Math-U-See.

http://www.youtube.com/user/tabletclass/videos

These are similar to Khan Academy in some ways, but more visually appealing.

Some of the videos correlate with a free math quizzes site: http://homeschoolmathquiz.com/

Grammar and Punctuation course

This is a well-done course for middle school through college. It hits mostly on the places most people make errors (so you won't be placing periods at the ends of sentences here). There are lessons and online exercises with instant feedback.

11 Math Resources (Guest Post by homeschool mom Chastity Wilson)

Eleven Online Resources for Engaging Students in Math
  1. Yummy Math is a free site that features relevant and timely real-world math activities – a recent post, for instance, featured NFL and Super Bowl related math problems. It could be a fun resource for students who have a hard time seeing the real-world value in learning math!
  2. Factor Samurai a free iPhone and iPad app for practicing times tables and prime factorization – one reviewer compared it to the addictive game Fruit Ninja, but with math!
  3. Sums Online offers several free math games for younger students, as well as app versions for mobile users.
  4. Study Jams is a Scholastic website with animated songs and videos explaining elementary level math and science concepts. Karaoke mode encourages kids to sing along!
  5. Along the same lines, Rhyme ‘n Learn explains higher level math and science concepts through catchy raps and Kahn Academy-style sketches. Check outDon’t Let Pi Make You Cry
  6. The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives is a project of Utah State University offering visual interactive online interactive tools and tutorials for math students in grades K-12.
  7. Brightstorm offers free homework help videos for math and science.
  8. Do I really need to tell you about Khan Academy? Probably not, but I’ll mention it anyway.
  9. Calkoo features a ton of free online calculators for different purposes.
  10. Circus Physics is a series of videos from PBS featuring circus tricks accompanied by lessons explaining the physics concepts behind them. This might be a cool resource for students who need to see concepts in order to “get it.”

Math, Science, and Reading/Grammar Worksheets and online Tests

You have to create an account, but the accounts are free!

http://www.mytestbook.com/

It's easy to set up a Parent account that lets you put in all your students, grades 1-8, and it keeps track of the tests your child has taken and if they passed or failed, and allows you to decide if the student should be allowed to retake or not.

Yenka: Math and Science lessons, demos, interactives

This is a very cool site. Focusing in math, physics, chemistry, programming, and engineering/technology, the site has interactives, demos, and tools as well as lessons on the subjects. There are over 300 physics resources alone!

http://www.yenka.com/

Sumdog Math Facts Practice

Similar to Fun4theBrain.com, this site gives you engaging games to practice math facts. These games, however, can be multiplayer games. Some have very hip, modern themes (like saving endangered animals). Play is free, but they do want you to register.

http://www.sumdog.com/

Virtual Math Manipulatives--"Thinking Blocks"

http://www.thinkingblocks.com/

I really love the approach on this site: First they teach you how to use the manipulatives to work math problems visually, and then they give you a chance to work it out. For example, the ratios section gives you a word problem and a work space so you can translate the word problem into thinking blocks and figure out the answer.

Great site!

This is a great writing text

None of the stupid games most writing teachers use in Elementary school (like "Write a report on a country..."). In fact, this downloadable text tells you how to make your writing great despite stupid teachers with bad writing pedagogy. And it's fun to read, with lots of examples.

https://ttms.box.net/shared/static/ldpbe9jvhy.pdf
(That's a download link, just so you aren't surprised when it starts to download).

You can get more great language arts downloads here: http://www.ttms.org/

Flipped Schools High School

This high school tried (successfully) a new technique for educating the students. They have the teachers record the lectures so the students watch them at home. Then they do the classwork in class instead of as homework.

The advantage of this for us is they put the lectures online, freely available to everyone. That means you can have a complete high school course in any of the core subjects free.

http://flippedhighschool.com/

Click on the subjects in the navigation bar. Because it is left to the teachers to record their lectures, the lectures are of varying quality (just like teacher's classes in real life are). But, since this is a functioning system in use by the school right now, there is a good chance the quality will improve over time.
